Study stay authorisation

Authorisation to stay in Spain to carry out studies, research, training, pupil mobility, internships or volunteering. Under RD 1155/2024 it is renamed stay for studies, pupil mobility, non-work internships, volunteering services or training activities.

Who is it for?

Non-EU nationals admitted to an official or recognised educational institution in Spain to pursue or extend studies, research or full-time training. EU/EEA/Switzerland citizens do not need it.

Main requirements

  • Be a national of a country outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland
  • Not be in an irregular situation in Spain (apply from your country of origin with a visa or while in a regular situation)
  • Have sufficient financial means to cover the stay and the return trip (100% of the monthly IPREM)
  • Have no criminal record (for stays longer than 6 months)

Duration

Equal to the duration of the course or training activity; renewable as long as the conditions are maintained and satisfactory progress is proven.

Usual documentation

  • Official application form (form EX-00) in duplicate and signed
  • Full valid passport with sufficient validity
  • Admission or enrolment in an official or recognised full-time educational institution in Spain
  • Proof of sufficient financial means (reference: 100% of the monthly IPREM)
  • Public or private health insurance with coverage in Spain
  • Criminal record certificate (if the stay exceeds 6 months and you are of legal age)
  • Medical certificate
  • Proof of accommodation
